July 25, 2002, Markham, Ontario - The Alex Chiu Golf Tournament held at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club was a huge success!
Over 144 avid golf players including politicians and sponsors came and enjoyed the weather-perfect day, the challenging 18-hole course, the supplementary games and the opportunity to interact socially during the evening dinner and award presentation. The tournament raised a total of $46,800. $30,000 will go towards the building fund of the Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians (MFFC), $1,800 towards the purchase of a piano organ for the MFFC Youth Group and $15,000 will benefit the Markhaven Foundation.
Established in 1989, the Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians is a non-profit organization that is committed to reaching out to the residents of Markham of all ethnic background, to extend a helping hand, and together, contribute to the vitality of the Town of Markham and its neighbouring communities. the organization provides various services and programs, including social, recreational, sports, heritage and culture, to seniors, youth and settlement services for new immigrants. Recently, MFFC has been granted $69,000 funding by the Ontario Trillium Foundation to enhance these services and broaden its participation base.
In 1960, Markhaven was established as a charitable, non-profit long term care facility whose vision is to provide a home where our seniors may find spiritual encouragement in a Christian atmosphere, embracing people from every denomination and culture. Markhaven is committed to the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of seniors. Over the years, Markhaven has earned a reputation for giving the kind of care and environment that provides security, stimulates interest and enriches the life of our seniors. Makhaven is affiliated with the Brethren Assemblies and is supported by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.
