With over 28 years of service in the community, the MFFC has grown to serve people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Our community centre, located in Markham, is inclusive to everyone and has programs that cater to various age groups, including youth, seniors, and emerging seniors.
The MFFC runs the seniors program to promote the appreciation and sharing of cultural heritage and to encourage interaction with and understanding of other cultures in Markham and surrounding areas, maintain a community centre that provides programs geared towards education, culture and health activities for people of all age groups (youth, adults and seniors) and support newcomers to integrate in the community.
Its current activities include exercise, Tai Chi, line dancing, Philippine and Hawaiian folk dancing, choral singing, wellness workshops, potluck lunch and social events and performances at cultural events and at senior homes.
This grant will fund the “Seniors Social Participation” Project which will include basic lessons in guitar, keyboard, French, Chinese and Spanish languages, Christmas decoration, yoga, Zumba and ballroom dancing and workshops on elder abuse, retirement financial management and healing yourself and seniors’ performances at nursing homes, senior residences and senior groups/organizations.
The project will also provide capital assistance for the maintenance of materials and utilities like lap top, lectern, projector, microphones, etc for use by the existing and new community programs for seniors.
Through this project, the MFFC expects their Senior members to learn new skills in music, languages, yoga, Zumba, ballroom dancing and Christmas decoration, increased awareness of signs and types of elder abuse and its prevention, increased knowledge about financial management and healing themselves, seniors showcasing their talents to other seniors, in singing, dancing and playing musical instruments, thus an increased overall sense of well-being, positive mood and mind stimulation.
