About the Awards

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians. To commemorate this significant milestone, MFFC will hold a Dinner Dance Fundraising Event “Toast to Diversity” on May 23, 2009 at the Thornhill Community Centre, 7755 Bayview Ave., Markham Ontario. The highlight of this celebration is the presentation of the MFFC Distinguished Achievement Awards. These awards are intended to recognize and honor persons of Filipino heritage who have achieved distinction in their field of endeavor, bringing honor and prestige to the Markham community.

The Association invites you to nominate people that you feel are deserving of these prestigious awards. Nominators are required to be members of MFFC or residents of Markham.

Awards Eligibility

The following criteria will be used to determine the eligibility of nominees for the MFFC Distinguished Achievement Awards:

1. The nominee must be of Filipino heritage and a resident of Markham.
2. He/she must have outstanding achievements in and contributions to any of
these six (6) fields of endeavor:

  • Academics (education, including research, teaching, program development or administration).

  • Arts and Letters (architecture, arts, literature and music).

  • Sports (professional or amateur sport).

  • Professional (social sciences, sciences, law or medicine and allied health fields).

  • Business and Industry

  • Public Service (including government, non-profit service sector, or community-based organizations).

The following are not eligible for nomination:

  • Past MFFC Distinguished Achievement awardees

  • Current members of the MFFC board of directors

  • Members of the 2009 Committee on Distinguished Achievement Awards and the Board of Judges.

Nomination Information Requirements

  1. A call for nomination will be made thru press releases and this website during the months of March and April.

  2. The nomination portfolio must contain:
    - A completed nomination form signed by the nominator. To download Nomination Form, click here.
    - A Nominee’s Release Form signed by the nominee. To download Nominee’s Release Form, click here.
    - Nominee’s CV or resume
    - Any other supporting documentation (such as letters of reference,
    recognitions and awards, testimonials, membership in professional or honorary
    societies, publications, patents, volunteer work, advocacies, and notable aspects
    of nominee’s personal life not readily apparent in the nominee’s curriculum
    vitae.)

  3. Mail the nomination portfolio postmarked not later than April 15, 2009 to:

Nomination Submissions Information

  1. Nominations are due by April 15, 2009.

  2. All submissions received will be kept confidential by the Awards Committee.

  3. The Awards Committee will review and validate the submissions and forward the short list of nominees to the Board of Judges by April 22, 2009.

The MFFC awards committee chair and a businessman or a community leader or a professional (engineer, doctor, dentist) or an academic

The Board of Judges will evaluate the short-listed nominations according to an established scoring process and come up with the awardees by April 30, 2009. All awardees will be informed by May 7, 2009.

Awards Presentation

The MFFC Distinguished Achievement Award winners will be honored and presented with a certificate at the MFFC 20th Anniversary Dinner Dance Fundraising Event on May 23, 2009, at the Thornhill Community Center.
