May 23, 2009, Markham – The theme of the Markham Federation of Filipino Canadian’s 20th Anniversary Dinner/Fundraiser on Saturday night was “A Toast to Diversity”. It was also the setting for an announcement by the Hon. Michael Chan, MPP and Fatima Haji, a volunteer with the Ontario Trillium Foundation, that the organization has received a one year, $122,500 grant to renovate and expand upon their building, located on Denison Street.
“A20th Anniversary is a special time for reflection about what has been achieved and where the future will take you,” said the Honourable Michael Chan, M.P.P., Markham-Unionville. “The Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians has made a strong contribution to our community and now, with this funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, there will be more room to offer support, learning and recreational activities”
The Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians has been actively working in the area for two decades, offering a variety of mentorship programs, fitness and recreational activities as well as acting as a hosting place for a variety of community activities and meetings. However, over the past few years, it was noted that the current 900 square foot building was becoming too small for its growing needs. When completed, the newly expanded building will be 2,400 square feet. Funds from the year-long Foundation grant are being used to help with the expense of the expansion and to buy new furniture for the building.
“The Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians is very appreciative of the capital grant provided by the Ontario Trillium Foundation” said Yolanda Ladines,Chair of the MFFC. “This will definitely enhance the programs and services offered at the community centre.”
The MFFC has been providing community services and operates from the community centre located at 1151 Denison St., in Markham. Since 1989, it has offered workshops, fitness and recreational programs and has hosted cultural celebrations. Since 1995 it has operated the community centre where birthdays, anniversaries, bridal/baby showers and other milestones are celebrated.
